Embedded Systems Expert · Author · CTO

About

I've spent 30+ years building firmware for safety-critical embedded systems — the invisible software inside medical devices, automotive controllers, avionics, and industrial equipment. I'm the CTO and co-owner of Barr Group, where we connect patent litigation lawyers with world-class expert witnesses.

Before that, I was best known for leading the Toyota unintended acceleration investigation — an 18-month, 7-engineer code review of Toyota's engine control firmware that uncovered critical software defects. I testified at trial in Oklahoma in 2013, contributing to a landmark verdict on automotive software safety.

I've also served as Editor-in-Chief of Embedded Systems Design magazine (1999–2012), taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland, and hold 3 US patents. I've published over 70 articles and authored multiple books on embedded systems programming.
